The U2 fansite @U2 had a party on Wednesday night to celebrate their 20th anniversary and the U2 covers band Unforgettable Fire performed. The people behind @U2 did let U2 know that they were having the party, since the band was in town doing a multi-night stint at Madison Square Gardens, and they were told that “maybe” that some U2 crew or management might stop by. The Edge’s guitar tech Dallas Schoo did show up and Unforgettable Fire were excited enough for him to sit in with the band for U2’s classic “Where the Streets Have No Name.” Little did anyone know (including the members of Unforgettable Fire) that Schoo was actually getting the guitar ready for U2’s real guitarist, The Edge, who suddenly appeared on stage with U2’s bassist Adam Clayton to perform The Joshua Tree song. They then also stuck around to do “Out of Control” after the crowd chanted “one more song.”

As you can see in the fan shot video below, the crowd lost it. You can hear one fan repeatedly say “Oh my God” when he works out what’s happening. Also, because the video was shot from the balcony and the lead singer of Unforgettable Fire (Tony Russo) is dressed and styled to look like Bono and also sounds like him, it’s almost like watching U2 perform a small club show. Unforgettable Fire are apparently the longest running U2 covers band and this must have been one the greatest nights ever for Russo and the rest of the band. Watch the video below via Rolling Stone and Consequence of Sound (photo via U2’s website). You can also watch a more professionally shot video of the performance over at U2’s website.
