Whitney features former Smith Westerns members Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek and they released their excellent debut album, Light Upon the Lake, back in June via Secretly Canadian. Now the band have shared a video for “Polly.” The animated clip is about a relationship, as the press release explains, “it focuses on vices that serve as causes for broken relationships between people and also represents the idea that no one is able to understand other people’s actual feelings.” Tokyo-based animator and illustrator Sarina Nihei “directed, animated, and hand-painted the entire video over the course of two months.” Ehrlich and Kakacekwere were both going through painful breakups when writing the songs on Light Upon the Lake, so the video fits the themes of the album too. As Ehrlich explains: “There’s a lot of true feeling behind these songs. We wanted them to have a part of our personalities in them. We wanted the songs to have soul.” Watch it below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.
