We Are Your Friends is Hollywood’s latest attempt to cash in on EDM and DJ culture. Zac Efron (who successfully transcended his teen star/High School Musical image in last year’s comedy Neighbors) stars as Cole, an aspiring DJ who’s hoping to escape living and dying in the valley and an office job future by becoming a famous EDM star. Wes Bentley plays an older DJ named James who mentors him, with Emily Ratajkowski as James’ flirty girlfriend Sophie.

So will this movie come to represent everything that’s wrong with the current state of dance music or will it just be a harmless cash in? Or perhaps it’ll actually be enjoyable? Director Max Joseph is previously best known for his documentary work, including 12 Years of DFA: Too Old to Be New, Too New to Be Classic, which was about the NYC record label behind LCD Soundsystem and others, as well as his work on MTV’s Catfish: The TV Show. Check out the trailer below and the movie hits U.S. theaters on August 28 via Warner Bros.
