Sleater-Kinney
Considering the popularity and appeal of testosterone-lead supergroups Them Crooked Vultures and Monsters of Folk, it was only a matter of time before rock’s feistiest females returned to their riot grrrl roots and formed a club of their own. Led by today’s most musically inclined femme fatales—Sleater Kinney frontwoman Carrie Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss, Minders’ Rebecca Cole and Helium vocalist-guitarist Mary Timony—Wild Flag have been working hard on their debut LP, which is due out some time next year. (Let’s hope for a spring release!).
Although the super-quartet isn’t too keen on revealing details about the album—their Facebook page describes their music as “wild” and “flaggy”—Wild Flag keep the intrigue alive with these recently released videos (posted below) from their mini West Coast tour, which kicked off last week. These fem-rockers not only played some pretty rad covers, including the Standells’ “Dirty Water” and the Rolling Stones’ “Beast of Burden,” but also gave concertgoers a first-listen of their fresh material. We’re still not convinced original track “Future Crimes” is as “flaggy” as it is angst-y, gritty, and overall exhilarating—but given the members’ former lives, we wouldn’t expect anything less.
