The Shins are releasing a new album, Heartworms, on Friday (March 10) via Aural Apothecary/Columbia. The band has already shared four songs from the album: “Dead Alive,” “Name For You,” “Mildenhall,” and “Painting a Hole.” Now frontman James Mercer has announced a new competition where you can win the band’s very first touring van, a 1990 Ford 350 Clubwagon. The band explains in a press release: “We bought it with our first advance from Sub Pop and toured the country in it for years. Now we’ve cherried it out and want one of YOU to keep the journey alive.”
To win the van you need to go to TheShins.com/van to enter. The band want you record a video of you or your band covering a track from Heartworms and then you need to upload it by April 4 at 11:59 PM PST using #ShinsVanContest. The Shins have also released a brief video of Mercer driving the van and explaining its history. Mercer says that he mainly uses it now to transport his Christmas trees each year and jokes that no one has ever had sex in the van. Watch the video below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.
Heartworms is the follow-up to 2012’s Port of Morrow. As usual, it was all written by frontman James Mercer, but this is the first Shins album since 2001’s Oh, Inverted World that Mercer has also self-produced (with the exception of “So Now What,” which was produced by Richard Swift).
