Get ready to say goodbye to Jess, Nick, Schmidt, Winston, and Cece, although not until next year. Zooey Deschanel‘s well-liked Fox sitcom New Girl is coming to an end. As Deadline reports, its seventh season will be its last.

The show almost didn’t get renewed for a final season, and the sixth season finale wrapped up enough to serve as an adequate series finale. But creator/executive producer Liz Meriweather pitched Fox one final eight-episode season that would be set three years after the end of season six and features one year in the life of all the main characters. It is not expected to air until midseason, meaning spring 2018, in part because Deschanel (Jess) is on maternity leave with her second child and the rest of the cast-Jake Johnson (Nick), Hannah Simone (Cece), Max Greenfield (Schmidt), and Lamorne Morris (Winston)-are all tied up with other commitments until the fall. Will Nick and Jess live happily ever after? We’ll see. Let’s just hope we don’t get a How I Met Your Mother style downer ending.
