The From Hell Companion
Top Shelf
May 28, 2013 Web Exclusive
Likely one of the few reader’s companions for a comic book, The From Hell Companion is an essential complement to From Hell, an ambitious investigation of the Jack the Ripper murders that’s dense enough to merit such an addendum. Organized by artist Eddie Campbell for Top Shelf, the book features his storyboards, sketches, and reference photos, detailing his process as he reconstructed late 19th-century England. Writer Alan Moore’s eccentrically detailed script is excerpted here (and playfully derided by Campbell). Worth the cost of admission for most fans and aspiring comics writers, Moore can write up to a dozen pages to be translated into a single page of art. Campbell’s filter is better suited for our reading pleasure, flexing the documentary muscles he wielded so well on his own Alec comics. (www.topshelfcomix.com)
