The scene was set for an evening of classical cellos belting out metal anthems. Apocalyptica, hot on the heels of 2023’s postponed album tour, were set to reignite Rock City walls with their unique blend of classic technical showmanship…and Metallica.

Celebrating the release of their tenth album, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica vol.2, the Finnish trio burst on to the stage with “Ride the Lightning”, before a crescendo into blissful, brutal arrangements of all time classics “Creeping Death” and “Fuel” - to name but a few.

They are die-hard Metallica fans, dedicating each song to memories of their youth and early inspiration, celebrating the opportunity to play a Cliff Burton original bass line in “Call of Ktulu.” Their playing is effortless, their outlook positive, their hair, simply enviable!

In short, Apocalyptica never fails to amaze with their unique blend of classic meets rock - one that would make even the heaviest of metalheads mosh along in appreciation; their take on “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters” are particularly legendary in their haunting and anthemic performance.

But their beauty lies not only in their incredible technical ability (the band originally formed at the world-renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and comprises some of the best technical musicians out there), but in their ability to draw and hold a crowd. Whether it’s synchronised headbanging camaraderie, cello-offs or lead solo Perttu Kivilaakso’s outstanding manipulation of his cello, from riffing on an ‘oversized guitar’ to playing the instrument behind his head. They are so well-rehearsed at captivating an audience, it is 90 minutes of rock n roll antics set to evocative and stirring strings.

Metallica fan or no, Apocalyptica proved, once again, that they are an experience NOT to be missed!
