The Arrow-verse expands in Arrow: The Dark Archer, DC Comics’ 12-part digital-first series that explores the untold history of (Green) Arrow villain Malcolm Merlyn. Television comic book tie-ins don’t always work, but it’s hard to find an example more reverential to its source material. The series is written by none other than the titular archer himself, actor John Barrowman, who fans of the CW Network series will recognize as Merlyn. Barrowman’s sister Carole co-writes, and artist Daniel Sampere brings the siblings’ vision to life. Arrow is one of the better superhero series currently on television, but only the show’s most avid enthusiasts are likely to find The Dark Archer worth reading. Cursory fans probably won’t feel connected to the story, and those who don’t watch Arrow or haven’t kept up with latest seasons will be unfazed by it. Barrowman’s attempts at fleshing out his character’s back-story are as admirable as they are esoteric. (www.dccomics.com)
