There have been some mighty strange Christmas albums recorded: Bob Dylan’s Christmas In the Heart, Twisted Sister’s A Twisted Christmas, and Scott Weiland’s recent Most Wonderful Time of the Year come to mind. But Super Furry Animals’ leader Gruff Rhys’ Atheist Xmas EP might take the cake. With three songs—“Post Apocalypse Christmas,” “At the End of the Line,” and “Slashed Wrists This Christmas”—Rhys has completely and utterly taken the piss out of one of our most beloved holidays. “Post Apocalypse Christmas” is a jaunty take on living hungry in a concrete bunker, celebrating the first Christmas holiday after nuclear winter. On track two, Rhys sings, “Dear Daddy, I’ve reached the end of the line,” overtop a swinging tempo and horn blasts. And “Slashed Wrists This Christmas” finds a manic-depressive bemoaning a failed suicide attempt, punctuated by Rhys’ sly humor: “You slit the wrong side, the top side, the watch side.” It’s a brilliant piss-take wrapped in top-notch songwriting.
