This six-disc box set finally unearths the entirety of Dylan‘s mythical ‘67 home-recordings with The Band. Hearing it is perhaps like leafing through the personal notebooks of Faulkner or Steinbeck. But to focus solely on the historical value is to deny the sheer pleasure of discovering all the stony in-jokes, congealing classics and left-field covers (“People Get Ready,” “You Win Again,” and “Mr. Blue” are equally poignant). It’s weirder, stylistically broader, and emotionally richer than the original Basement Tapes. Some will argue that it’s too much of a good thing. To employ one of Dylan’s ingeniously elementary aphorisms, that sure beats too much of nothing. (www.bobdylan.com)
