Los Angeles-based AM and London-based Shawn Lee both have an inherent feel for unadulterated soul vibes and funk tempos filtered through ‘70s soundtracks. These soul boys found each other across oceans and joined forces to create Celestial Electric. Together, the duo’s understanding of classic sounds take on a modern flavor that enhances what each artist does exponentially.
Recorded inter-continentally via Internet exchanges, Lee’s groove-based psychedelia informs AM’s cool falsetto tones and vice versa. Celestial Electric is overwhelmingly a summer record—but one you can pull out on the coldest of winter nights and be instantly transported to warmer climes with its tropicalia-tinged melodies. Contrasting textures and eras shake down on “Dark Into Light” where AM warbles gently over the vibrations of Lee’s buzzing rhythms. “Lonely Life” recalls the song-oriented, Leo Sayer side of the ‘70s and the duo’s version of Ozark Mountain Daredevils’ “Jackie Blue” overtly exposes the source of their inspiration. Great stuff. (www.amandshawnlee.com)
