Paul Newman’s recent passing was a tremendous loss to the film world. The recent special edition release of one of his signature movies, Cool Hand Luke, is a great tribute to the larger-than-life actor. He leads an impressive cast of imprisoned misfits (look carefully for Dennis Hopper and Harry Dean Stanton) as they work out their time for The Man. Newman’s noble Luke breaks the rules while remaining effortlessly cool, though a desperation moves subtly beneath. George Kennedy may have won a Supporting Actor Oscar for his undeniably amazing performance as Dragline, but watching Newman play the guitar and sing a song after a loved one dies makes you wonder why it took until The Color of Money to finally give the actor his due. The new edition features a brilliant transfer of the film that spotlights Conrad Hall’s engaging frames and Lalo Schifrin’s memorable score. A great featurette on the making of the film and a commentary from Newman biographer Eric Lax are both worthy ways to honor both the man and the film. (www.wbhidef.com)
