Frank Miller’s seminal 1986 comic book, The Dark Knight Returns, redefined and reignited interest in Batman, setting the precedent for caped crusader storylines for the next 30 years (and presumably beyond). A decade and a half later, Miller followed up the four-issue series with The Dark Knight Strikes Again. Now, nearly three full decades after the Dark Knight first returned, Frank Miller and co-writer Brian Azzarello—also responsible for iconic Batman work (The Joker)—complete the trilogy with Dark Knight III: The Master Race.
After three years of silence, Batman returns to Gotham with what appears to be a war against the police. He is caught on camera attacking a squad of officers, and his actions jumpstart the discussion about the role vigilantes play in society, while providing a foil for the ongoing examination of police use of force in America (Miller’s work often taps into current events, especially this trilogy). Meanwhile, Wonder Woman and Superman—the two other members of DC’s legendary trinity—have also retreated from global society, though with Batman back, they’re sure to step into the spotlight before too long. With art from the definitive talents of Klaus Janson and Andy Kubert, the eight-issue The Master Race will doubtlessly prove an essential addition to the Bat-library. (www.dccomics.com)
