Photographer Peter Beste and editor Johan Kugelberg have published photography books on Norwegian black metal, Houston rap, and Scandinavian danseband. Defenders of the Faith focuses on heavy metal and specifically the patch-festooned jackets with which metalheads worldwide profess their allegiance to their favorite bands.
Documenting not only the jackets themselves but also the people and the subculture behind them, Defenders of the Faith portrays what can only be described as a lifestyle. The detail in the jackets is put on full display here. The familial atmosphere of the fans wearing the jackets is evident. This coffee table book is overall a wonderful document of what it is to be metal through and through. Defenders of the Faith rocks hard.
