Futurama: Volume 5 DVD/Blu-ray

Comedy Central

After unceremoniously being canceled by Fox in 2003, Futurama languished in reruns and straight-to-video movies until Comedy Central revived the series last year. Or as the season opener declares, “You will awaken feeling refreshed, as if Futurama had never been cancelled by idiots, then brought back by bigger idiots.” This statement is as indicative of the series as any. If the humor of Simpsons (also created by Matt Groening) is a scalpel, then the “call it like you see it” tone of Futurama is a sledgehammer—crushing all reason with humor.

In the new season, the delivery gang is back in full force, their hijacks taking them to other planets, deep underground, and one minute into the future in a malfunctioning time craft. Star Wars, Titanic, and Roots are all shamelessly pilfered for material—and both street artist Space Invader, and reality-bender M.C. Escher are referenced in one-off visual gags. But the best episodes all feature around topical issues. The controversy around Prop 8 is explored as characters struggle to legalize Prop Infinity (legalizing Robot/human marriage, naturally), and Apple and Twitter are both skewered with magnificent ease. Extras range from the inspired (an in-character reading of Philip J. Fry’s comic book), to the informative (a table read complete with visualization sketches), to the banal (a Bender music video that’s more like a glorified clip show). Overall, a welcome return. I have seen the future, and it’s hilarious. (www.comedycentral.com/shows/futurama/index.jhtml)
