It may have taken 13 years, but it looks like the creators of FYF Fest have figured out the key to creating a memorable festival experience-diversity. FYF Fest 2017 proved once over that when festival organizers make a real effort to create a diverse and varied lineup that caters to people across the spectrum, everyone wins.
This year’s newly extended three-day lineup was stacked with exceptional talent with no shortage of newcomers to discover (Princess Nokia, Andy Shauf) and old favorites to relish (Nine Inch Nails, Iggy Pop). And, with headliners like Missy Elliott, Bjork, Erykah Badu, Solange, Frank Ocean, and A Tribe Called Quest, women and artists of color were given the spotlight in an unprecedented way for a festival like FYF.
While the festival’s origins have always been rooted in the alternative and indie rock world, the last few years have seen expansion into hip-hop and R&B (Kanye West, Run The Jewels, D’Angelo, and FKA twigs have all performed in the last two years), making FYF Fest one of the few events where attendees can really see themselves being represented in the audience and on the stage. If 2017’s lineup is any indication of what’s to come, then FYF will continue to set the bar for music festivals higher in the years to come.
