Good Luck and Do Your Best
City Slang
May 24, 2016 Gold Panda
“Good luck and do your best!”—the parting wishes of a Hiroshima taxi driver to producer Gold Panda (aka Derwin Schlecker) on a recent trip to Japan. Little did that driver know that his simple politeness would be the catalyst for a new album for the English electronic artist. The title was the genesis of the record, with what followed becoming Gold Panda’s most optimistic album yet.
The influences of travel have always been prominent on Gold Panda’s releases, and Good Luck and Do Your Best is no exception. The sampling of East Asian instrumentation crops up frequently and to stunning effect, notably on “Time Eater” and “In My Car.” Schlecker’s samples are the secret to his music’s success; each track swells with the joy of travel and the colour and opportunity that it brings. As with previous releases, Gold Panda blends repetition with rich sonic textures that are so diverse that they are almost tactile. This is one of 2016’s best electronic albums so far, and it’s difficult to see how it can be topped. (www.iamgoldpanda.com)

Gold Panda s warm and exuberant new album sounds quite unlike any of the electronic music being made in 2016, and is refreshingly unfashionable in that way.
