August By Cake is Robert Pollard’s 100th album, and a double album to boot. Not only that but a great double album. It’s amazing how Pollard still manages to mine new ground in the classic rock and pop vein, here big on the ‘70s, without simply rehashing old material. But it’s not just Bob this time, there are contributions from all the rest of the band too. Doug Gillard’s bouncy “Goodbye Note” is a definite stand out as is the gorgeous romantic pop of Kevin March’s “Sentimental Wars.” Of Pollard’s own, opener “5° On the Inside” triumphantly heralds what is to come, while “When We All Hold Hands” and a co-write with brother Jimmy, “Dr. Feelgood Falls Off the Ocean,” are also highlights. But there are many others too, and the album is so strong that it’s possible had this been released instead of Bee Thousand at the time, it would’ve had the same impact. (http://www.gbv.com)
