Does Half-Handed Cloud sound quite a bit like Sufjan Stevens? Yes, definitely. But this is a project put out by Asthmatic Kitty and produced by none other than Stevens himself. John Ringhofer may dabble in the same pool of musical eccentricity as his producer, but he’s also more up front about the importance of the Christian faith to both his life and his lyrics. Flying Scroll Flight Control sounds like a hymnal from Mars, a playful and quirky set of songs for Jesus that are still enjoyable even if you wouldn’t be caught dead in a pew.

If you were unimpressed with Stevens’ turn toward the electronic with The Age of Adz, Ringhofer will send you right back to the sounds of Seven Swans. This is the Apostle’s Creed on speed, a fanfare of quickly played keyboards and ecstatic orchestration. It’s a record of maturity recorded with childlike faith. (www.halfhandedcloud.com)
