Recycling is good—especially if it’s ’60s/’70s cheese staple, Hawaii Five-0. CBS’s fresh take on this signature cop show eschews the corniness and exaggerated eyebrow-waggling of the original for young, confident, and downright hot. Alex O’Loughlin (The Shield, Moonlight) heads up the solid cast as a disturbingly youthful and good-looking former naval officer, Steve McGarrett. After the murder of his father, he’s put in control of a special team in charge of hunting down the biggest game on the island. As his subordinate, Danny “Danno” Williams, Scott Caan refuses to play second banana to McGarrett. Understandable, since Caan’s uncanny resemblance to his father, James Caan, in both features and mannerisms, simply doesn’t allow Sonny Corleone to take a backseat to anyone. Lost’s Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) handles the role of Chin Ho Kelly, a wrongly disgraced detective turned federal security. Self-assured and efficient, he provides a strong support for McGarrett’s and Williams’ trigger-happy characters—the body count in the pilot alone is a downright massacre. Providing the eye candy—enough to cause cavities—is Grace Park playing Kono Kalakaua, Kelly’s cousin and police academy rookie. Fast and fun, Caan’s on-point comedic timing—one of the show’s standout characteristics—provides an entertaining twist to the run-and-jump carnage. While Hawaii Five-0 Mark II has none of its predecessor’s cringe factor, the classic theme music retains its blood-rushing quality with a sharp, updated recording. And when McGarrett first utters the infamous line, “Book ’em Danno,” we dare you not to let a little grin escape. (www.cbs.com/primetime/Hawaii_Five_O)
