Patrick Creadon’s I.O.U.S.A. couldn’t have come at a better time. As President Obama and his administration have a great deal of work to do, perhaps the biggest problem they are facing is the United States economy—including our staggering national debt. Creadon, who previously made Wordplay, a charming examination of the New York Times crossword puzzle and those who create and obsess over it, now moves his light touch to numbers instead of letters and those who face a more sobering challenge.

I’m pleased to say that the film avoids presenting its depressing financial facts in a detached and cold fashion. By featuring well-animated and informative graphics and interviews with financial luminaries such as billionaire investor Warren Buffett, economist and former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, and former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill, he manages with efficiency to convey that we’re fucked. It might be time to start hiding your money under your mattress.

The extra features include an update on what happened to the U.S. economy between the time the film was released in theaters and the time this DVD was produced. As you’re probably aware, things have gotten worse. You’ll also find more “Word on the Street” footage with Regular Joes and extended talks with the big money folks, who are unsurprisingly mostly old white guys. Hmmm.
