Julie Byrne never strays from her warm murmur and whispers of instrumentation on her sophomore album Not Even Happiness. She is a ghostly figure who has been hurt by love (“Sleepwalker”), floated through States (“Melting Grid”), and traipsed the woods (“Wisdom Teeth Song”). But beyond the hushed sounds of the record, Byrne, for the most part, is not timid but in possession of a rich confidence. The first line of the record (“Follow my voice, I am right here”) is a declaration of her assertiveness while later, on the rambling “All the Land Glimmered,” a breathtaking confidence glows again as she sings, “I was in my heart and I answered me.” It’s these sorts of subtleties that make Byrne shine and Not Even Happiness soar.
