This quickie pairs “Last Choice,” one of the finer moments from Love Is All’s last full-length A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night, with five new tunes. Wyatt Cusick, who recorded the full-length, is also at the boards on the new songs, helping ensure the reverb-laden, raw garage attack that makes Love Is All’s punked-up pop tunes work so well.
Lyrically, singer and keyboardist Josephine Olausson is as amusing as ever. “Jealousy” is a farce about a jealous girlfriend, and “Vans Vans Vans” is an homage to crappy tour vehicles. “Loud Heart” is the requisite heartbreak song, delivered with Moe Tucker cuteness. No matter the subject, Olausson tackles it with excessive wit and her defiantly Swedish accent, both of which fans will continue to eat up with gusto.
Of course, it helps that the band continues to rock. “Last Choice” is the quintessential Love Is All song, with danceable verses and explosive bridges and choruses ringing out with organ, bells, and sax whole notes. “Early Warnings” does the same, pounding away relentlessly. The tom-driven, Adam Ant-flavored “Vans Vans Vans” absolutely self-destructs. “From Your Corner” may be the highlight. It’s irresistible, like a hyped-up collision of The Clean and The Bangles. Come to think of it, that might be an apt two-band descriptor for Love Is All’s whole approach. The difference being that The Bangles’ Mondays were nowhere near this manic.
