Half an hour into Lykke Li’s set at the Apollo Theater she proudly proclaimed, “My new album is kind of a bummer, but I have to stay true to my heart.” The stage was dark with each of her musicians, dressed all in black, surrounded by white light bulbs that seemed to elevate the platforms on which they played. The Swedish singer’s fantastic new album, I Never Learn, populated the majority of the night’s melancholy set, at one point with the crooner explaining that the new track “Love Me Like I’m Not Made of Stone” was hard for her to get through. It’s not difficult to understand why; this new album showcases a mature artist battling the wounds of a broken heart. Throughout the 90 minute set Li changed the energy back and forth from earlier, dancier numbers to ballads, and the crowd followed her every move. She maintained a rapt command of the material and audience, creating an electric atmosphere in the legendary venue.

“I Never Learn”
