New Avengers: The Reunion

For fans of the West Coast Avengers series from the early 1980s, New Avengers: The Reunion scratches a certain long-neglected itch. And it also exposes, in a sense, the limitations of the 30-year+ serial story. Former couple Bobbi Morse (aka Mockingbird) and Clint Barton (known for most of his career as Hawkeye, but now going by the decidedly less campy and rather ho-hum identity of Ronin) hash out what remains of their relationship while playing at high-stakes superheroics.

Writer Jim McCann does a yeoman’s job in making it approachable, understandable, and pretty fun. And David Lopez’s pencils are a good match (and, while I suspect I’m in a minority, I quite like Mockingbird’s new costume). But I can’t say confidently that people new to these characters would enjoy the book as much as entrenched fans-such as those fans who’ve been reading the squabbles and triumphs of these two since the Hawkeye four-issue limited series from 1983, through their time on the West Coast Avengers team, through Mockingbird’s apparent death, and through her recent return from alien abduction.

Get the point? This is Marvel Fan Porn. It’s a good bookand new fans might find it okay. But only longtime fans will be excited. (www.marvel.com)
