On Pavo Pavo’s second full length, Mystery Hour, the band finds itself a new sense of determination in the middle of a crossroads. The album is a shared document expressing the bittersweet tension and release of the six-year romance of Oliver Hill and Eliza Bagg. They offer their musings on the decay and regeneration of their relationship as it takes on new forms, all within a unified voice that manages to escape the “he said/she said” call and response that can come from dual perspectives that are opposed to one another. The arrangements on the album are lush, warmly treated pieces of chamber pop with buzzing sawtooth synths and strings swelling and annealing around stacked vocal harmonies and lightly treated leads. While a lot of this album is sonically in the terrain of the new psychedelia, it is emotionally accessible to anyone. (www.pavopavomusic.com)
