Issue #29 - Year End 2009 - Best of the Decade
She was a sultry blues singer. He was an internationally admired beat-maker. They said it couldn’t work. They were right. While billed as a partnership, Real Life Is No Cool plays more like a tug-of-war as singer and producer struggle to find harmony between two disparate sounds. Instead of a happy marriage of Christabelle’s slick vocals and Lindstrøm’s slow-building dramatics, we’re literally given the worst of both worlds-resulting in an album that wildly oscillates between discordance and boredom. Moments in “Baby Can’t Stop” show a potential for brilliance, but overall, this partnership should be given the ol’ “Dear John.”
