In the spirit of Happy Days, The Wonder Years, and That ‘70s Show, The Goldbergs takes the audience back a couple of decades to 1985, a simpler time when the wacky hijinks of a loving dysfunctional family can be filtered through pop-culture references and dated hairstyles. Narrated by Patton Oswalt and starring Jeff Garlin and Wendi McLendon-Covey, the cast is inspired enough, and since they’re based on creator Adam F. Goldberg’s real life family, you’d think they’d be able to offer a little more chemistry. But unfortunately, the jokes just come off as slightly awkward, and they ultimately fall flat. The Goldbergs banks on nostalgia for its charm, but needs to build on something more for us to really care about this family. (www.abc.go.com/shows/the-goldbergs)
