The Lost Voice

Published by Harper One

May 20, 2025

Greta Morgan is the singer/songwriter of The Hush Sound, Gold Motel, and Springtime Carnivores. She has worked with Katy Goodman and been a touring musician with both Jenny Lewis and Vampire Weekend. During the pandemic, after contracting COVID, she lost her voice. Morgan was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological disorder with no cure. The Lost Voice is her story.

Throughout her memoir, Morgan details the ups and downs of a singer’s life, detailing her band history and collaborations, ones that ultimately led her to performing with Vampire Weekend in venues like Madison Square Garden. A good part of her book is devoted to these pursuits. But the real story of The Lost Voice is Morgan’s post-COVID trauma, the losing of her most precious gift, how she coped, and ultimately her rising above her affliction to find herself.

She details a wilderness retreat, various therapies both medical and holistic, and more importantly how she grappled with her new reality. Even if you are not intimately familiar with Morgan’s music, her memoir brings you into her world with highly readable prose that is intelligent and engaging. Her story will leave you rapt, and most likely if you weren’t all that familiar with her music before, the strength of her prose will have you seeking it out. In the end, Morgan both finds and redefines herself. It’s a story eminently relatable to anyone who has suffered loss, and in totality, her story becomes a beacon. (www.harpercollins.com)
