Joel is a non-threatening, handsome guy with a beautiful girlfriend and a great career. Molly is a klutzy, quirky owner of a nonprofit candy store who’s just looking for love. When their lives collide, they’ll prove that love is real, that anything is possible and that romantic comedies have gotten really, really stupid.
Grafting his roots in the absurdist sketch comedy series The State to the rigid structure of the modern rom-com, director David Wain has created a playfully bizarre takedown of the genre that just barely manages to not wear out its welcome. Right from the recurring framing device, in which Joel and Molly-played by Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler-regal two dinner companions with the long, formulaic story of their romance, the film makes no pretense of having a fourth wall, featuring everything from literal winks at the audience to montage sequences that take you behind their own scenes. The loose style gives the cast enough room for the necessary wacky tangents that flesh out the bare bones plot of every romantic comedy from the last twenty years.
Even at a brisk eighty-three minutes, the film runs the risk of wearing the joke thin. Rudd and Poehler both play their established archetypes cranked up to eleven and the degree to which an audience will be on board for the entire runtime rests squarely on how much they enjoy said archetypes. There are enough cameos and lengthy non-sequiturs—the revelation of Molly’s ex-husbands are a particular gem—to keep the average comedy fan interested, but it is odd when a films greatest strength is its filler material.
