And the race is on! After running (or rather driving) into the sunset with a bleeding Captain Jack in her car, Ester and the team have reassembled in Wales to stage a final stand against…well they’re really not sure. How did they get all the way across the world and maintain secrecy? What happened in the two-month narrative gap? Do we really care? (No.) The point is, the gang is back together and-at long last-we’re reminded that the stakes are (to borrow parlance from Gwen) bloody high. You know, world economic depression, furnaces in death camps still a’ blazing, people ready to cut you on the street for an Advil…same ol’ same ol’.

It’s a good deal of setup for sure, but things are finally moving and threads are being connected. We learn more about the shadowy three families who are pulling the strings, thanks to the increasingly ambitious Jilly Kitzinger, and the fight quickly becomes personal for Gwen, whose heartbreak turns to ambition.

Almost on an investigative lark the team discovers an odd worldwide link—a potential lead, or wildest of goose chases? Gwen grudgingly joins an on-the-run Oswald Dances, and a still bleeding Jack for the next leg of their fight, which shoots them off to a new—and increasingly more dangerous location. Meanwhile our other characters gallop off to a new front as well—all with only the faintest idea what’s in store for them. (
