Torchwood: The Complete Second Season
BBC Video
Nov 01, 2008 Year End 2008 - Best of 2008
A definite improvement over its first season, Torchwood season two features more ambitious and emotionally involving stories. The Doctor Who spin off centers around a secret team of government agents who investigate the strange encounters that happen in Cardiff, Wales, which has a rift in space and time running through it. The team is lead by the bisexual Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), a man who simply can’t be killed. The season begins with a stellar guest star turn by Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s James Marsters, who plays Captain John Hart, a rogue time agent and Jack’s former lover and nemesis. Later in the season, the team discovers that some Cardiff residents are, unbeknownst to themselves, sleeper agents for a pending alien invasion; Toshiko (Naoko Mori) falls in love with a cryogenically frozen man from 1918 who is awakened for one day every year; they encounter an adversary who is able to manipulate their memories; and Doctor Who companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) shows up for a three-episode arc. But the season’s coolest moment comes when the immortal Jack is sent back in time to the year 27 AD and is buried alive, remaining so for hundreds of years until he’s found by an earlier Torchwood team in 1901, who then cryogenically freeze Jack so that he wakes up in 2007 just in time to save the day. The stakes are higher in season two and, be warned, not every team member survives the season alive. The DVD set includes making-of documentaries on each of the 13 episodes, deleted scenes, and more.
