Bodies of Water

Twist Again

Thousand Tongues

I love the pun-tastic title of Bodies of Water’s third full-length. After the Los Angeles band’s previous two albums, 2007’s Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink, and 2008’s A Certain Feeling, Bodies of Water core members Meredith and David Metcalf took aliases and released a few EPs and, in 2009, the full-length Expressions as the ’70s danceable pop/ABBA-loving tunesmiths Music Go Music. Now, the Metcalfs have returned to “twist again” like they did three summers ago. The piano-driven minute-and-a-half ditty “Triplets” nods to the perfect pop of Expressions, but the rest of Twist Again is a subdued return to form for the melodic maestros. “Open Rhythms” is a cool, ethereal piece of string, electric guitar, and cascading synth brilliance sung with detached ambience by Meredith. David channels Bowie on the mariachi horn-inflected “Mary, Don’t You Weep.” The couple’s voices play off each other beautifully on the playful yet restrained “Like a Stranger,” and David invokes the title on the heart-wrenching final cut “You Knew Me So Well.” It’s a wonderful return for the much-underappreciated band.
