V was a beloved ‘80s miniseries and series about an alien race that comes to Earth preaching peace but hiding darker motives (and lizard-like bodies under their fake human skin). ABC’s remake is faithful in premise and slicker in presentation. The pilot wastes no time in having the aliens arrive and introducing the main characters, including Firefly‘s Morena Baccarin as the charismatic leader of the Visitors; Lost‘s Elizabeth Mitchell as an FBI agent on the trail of terrorists; Joel Gretsch as a Catholic priest who has a crisis of faith due to the existence of aliens; and Scott Wolf as a morally ambiguous TV reporter (with no qualms about trading sex for a big interview) who becomes the Visitors’ spokesperson. In one interesting change from the original V, some Visitors have already been on Earth for years in sleeper cells. And in an amusing play on current events, the Visitors offer the world true Universal Healthcare, but their real plot is more nefarious. The original V famously worked best as two miniseries, but faltered when it continued as a regular series. It remains to be seen whether this V will sustain itself over multiple seasons, but it’s off to a somewhat promising start. (www.abc.go.com/shows/v)

A 6 is too generous.

I loved the 80’s series. I think the remake is even better. There’s more depth.
