Islamic terrorists detonate bombs in Washington, DC and Los Angeles. The U.S. government institutes a draft, invades Iran, and sets its sites on Syria. But public opinion turns against the wars after more attacks on American soil and, in the face of a wave of draft dodgers, the government develops a way to give actual superpowers (flight, super-speed, telekinesis, etc.) to its soldiers via special pills. Writer Mark Millar (Civil War) focuses on a team of new recruits with questionable motives for joining up—are they with the antiwar movement or are they working for the enemy? The first two issues of Millar’s provocative six issue series (competently drawn by Tony Harris) set up an intriguing premise, a scary political allegory along the lines of DMZ. Unlike DMZ, there’s no strong central character to easily identify with, but, after only two issues, War Heroes definitely looks promising.
