Shower Curtain

words from a wishing well

Angel Tapes/Fire Talk

Dec 09, 2024 Web Exclusive

While it’s rare for the lead-up to a debut album to go this long, the six-year build to Shower Curtain’s first LP has proved worth the wait. Prior singles “benadryl man” and “edgar” and louder tracks like “bedbugs” and “take me home” will most excite those piqued by the band’s shoegaze influences; Shower Curtain’s precision-controlled distortion and Victoria Winter’s buoyant vocals might make one think of a coarser-edged Slowdive, or a gauzy Swervedriver. Even when they aren’t blanketing listeners in heavy fuzz, there are songs that could’ve similarly found a home in the early ’90s 120 Minutes rotation, with lots of loud-quiet-loud dynamics that’d make The Breeders nod with appreciation and searing solos that recall Gish-era Smashing Pumpkins.

Since the project debuted in 2018, Shower Curtain has moved its home base from Brazil to Brooklyn and expanded from a solo act into a quartet. Words from a wishing well may be their “first” album, but that extra development time has allowed them to hit the ground running. (www.showercurtainband.com)
