Originally conceived as a solo vehicle for the songs of Versus guitarist James Baluyut, +/- has gradually evolved into a more cohesive band unit with each succeeding effort. Once again augmented by guitarist/vocalist Patrick Ramos (also of Versus) and drummer Chris Deaner, Xs on Your Eyes strides confidently into new territory, mitigating the electronic cut and paste ethos of their earlier works in favor of tasteful organic lapidary—including luscious pedal steel and swelling brass—all anchored by Deaner’s crisp, forceful drumming. The magisterial radiance of “The Queen of Nothing,” tremulous gossamer sway of “Marina,” and fractured anthemics of “Snowblind” find the band tapping into their rich well of innate pop instincts, and triumphing spectacularly.
