Musical Anthropology, or My Ever Shrinking Indie Cred
Volume 4: Aerosmith
Aug 07, 2012 Aerosmith
It’s been quite some time since the vast other-regions of music (apart from indie fare) have been explored in this column, and what better a time to resurrect My Ever Shrinking Indie Cred than summertime, especially when it comes to a band like Aerosmith.
Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and the gang have gotten a bad rap in the past several years. Aside from the most recent band squabbles and Tyler’s questionable gig on American Idol, the band’s musical output has been remarkably inconsistent since its famous duet with Britney Spears at the Super Bowl in 2001. That year’s Just Push Play was incidentally the last album of original material the band has released, and apart from a couple decent yet non-Aerosmith-y pop singles, the album was hardly memorable.
Still, for those who can remember back that far, Aerosmith was once (or even twice) before a powerhouse. Throughout the ‘70s, one would be hard pressed to find a better blues-based rock band, and its return in the late ‘80s exposed a new generation of fans to its same old song and dance. Which is why, with a new single harking back the days of ‘70s Aerosmith glory, Tyler backing off his Idol gig, and the band finally back together again, it’s prime time to re-explore the pomp and kick-ass bombast that was (and hopefully still is) Aerosmith. And what better a place to see for oneself than a concert.
On a crisp summer night in Philadelphia, Aerosmith entered stage at about 9 PM, Tyler and Perry onto a catwalk, rising from below, and the rest of the band, guitarist Brad Whitford, drummer Joey Kramer, and bassist Tom Hamilton, onto the stage proper. The opening number was “Draw the Line,” from the 1977 album of the same name, and from the moment those Toxic Twins rose to the stage, the vibe was electric. Over the next two hours, Aerosmith proved itself a continued force to be reckoned with, playing hits spanning their decades and sparing no inch of enthusiasm or crowd baiting theatric. Tyler’s moves were spot on, like a recreation of the live scenes from the band’s ‘90s hit “Cryin’,” which was performed here as said video broadcast on the big screen behind the band. Perry’s playing was as fluid and forceful as ever, and fellow guitarist Whitford could not be forgotten in the mix, his bluesy solo leading into a stomping version of the band’s 1976 hit “Last Child.”
Most surprisingly, however, was that Tyler’s voice had not lost even a bit of its power and range. This is a dude who has been wailing like a banshee, or “Demon of Screamin’” as Perry introduced him at the end of the show, for the better part of 40 years. Yet, the falsetto shrieks of a song like “What It Takes,” from 1989’s Pump, were rendered perfectly; after an a cappella first verse, Tyler proceeded to hit every high note with seeming ease.
All of the known classics were played on this night. (“Love in an Elevator,” “Rag Doll,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Walk This Way”). A few deep cuts were revisited in stellar fashion (“Lick and a Promise,” an epic “Rattlesnake Shake,” and “Chip Away the Stone,” which closed out the set). There were some notable omissions, as no “Toys in the Attic” or “Mama Kin” were present. But what may have been the best surprise of the evening was how well two new tracks fit into the set. “Oh Yeah” was an engaging bluesy groove, after which Tyler hugged Perry, and the band’s new single “Legendary Child,” sounded like it could have come straight off 1976’s Rocks, or if not, at least ‘93’s Get A Grip.
By the time the encore rolled around, Tyler being hoisted up onto the catwalk from below, seated on a white piano and playing the opening lines of “Dream On,” the question of whether Aerosmith remains in the pantheon of top rock and roll acts had already been answered. “Dream On,” with Perry cutting his guitar lines standing atop Tyler’s piano was followed by the classic “Train Kept A-Rollin’,” and after confetti rained down on the audience from above, the band broke into “Chip Away at the Stone.” It was a remarkable ending to a beautifully surreal evening. Make no mistake, Aerosmith remains king.

Hi there! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I’m getting sick and tired of Wordpress because I’ve had issues with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.

Did you know, that originally Aersmith wanted to name themselves either Spike Jones or Jack Daniels.
All of you, who own the original artwork-cover of the album “Done With Mirrors” are very lucky. Every single unit is only shown in mirror-writing.
The album “Pump” was originally supposed to be named “Bobbing For Piranhas”.
The scene within the videoclip to “Cryin´ “, where Alicia Silverstone is jumping down from a bridge, did cost 10.000 Dollar and lasted only 5 seconds.
For the recordings of the song “I Don´t Want to Miss A Thing” there was a 52 men string orchestra used.
