Laura Veirs has constructed a healthy folk-pop career from lyrical references to far-off galaxies and tumultuous seas. Now the Portland singer-songwriter is returning with her seventh album, July Flame. It’s coming out January 12th on her Raven Marching Band imprint and features guest spots from the likes of Karl Blau, Jim James (Monsters of Folk, My Morning Jacket), and Eyvind Kang. Here’s a nice foretaste of the 13-track LP: the moldy, sea-weary single, “Wide-Eyed, Legless.” The nu-folk cut’s vivid word imagery pairs well with its strummy and loping gait.
If one’s not enough, free downloads of new songs, “July Flame” and “I Can See Your Tracks,” can be peeped at RMB. Also, be sure to check out Veir’s second fan video contest on her website. Fall tour dates are already planned.
Annie
“I Don’t Like Your Band” MP3
Oct 13, 2009
Norwegian electropop star Annie is finally releasing her sophomore LP, Don’t Stop, after several leaks and renegged release dates. The album is coming out November 17th via the Oslo indie imprint, Smalltown Supersound.
As a sampler of what’s to come, Annie’s releasing a new glossy cut, entitled “I Don’t Like Your Band.” As the title implies, the song’s is all telling your significant other that they’re great but their music is subpar. Annie sings, “It’s not you, it’s your tunes” over a massive, robot voice electro beat.
St. Vincent continues chronicling their tour with Andrew Bird with two more installments of their video diary. In the third installment (above) Annie Clark candidly discusses her touring bandmates and the fourth clip is some beautiful rehearsal footage of Clark and violinist Daniel Heart playing the Marry Me b-side, “Oh My God.” You can watch the other videos on the band’s blog. St. Vincent is on tour for the remainder of the year. Actor is out now on 4AD.
CANT
“Ghosts” MP3
Oct 13, 2009
Grizzly Bear egineer/mixer/multi-instrumentalist/producer Chris Taylor released his debut solo 7” single under the CANT namesake today through his Terrible Records imprint. The haunting/ethereal “Ghosts” (available above) is backed by an unearthed ArthurRussell flipside cut called “Come to Life.” The latter makes sense since Taylor is a renowned archivist/remasterer of Russell’s work (most notably on the 2008 compilation Love is Overtaking Me). Fans of Taylor’s work in Department of Eagles and Grizzly Bear will immediately glom onto this sound.
The CANT/Arthur Russell split is limited to a 1000-copy run, and was produced/recorded by Taylor in his Brooklyn church/studio. Get it here before it pulls a Casper on you. This is the first in a series of 7” singles that Taylor produced at Terrible Studios, the same place where he produced much of Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest. On October 28th, his record label will release All of the Fire, a five-song 10” EP from the New York group Acrylics, which Taylor also produced. (via GvsB)
Grizzly Bear
“Two Weeks (Live on Conan O’Brien, Ft. Beach House’s Victoria Legrand) Video
Grizzly Bear and old buddy Victoria Legrand (Beach House) performed a pitch-perfect rendition of Veckatimest‘s “Two Weeks” on Conan O’Brien last night (October 12th). A very done up Legrand provided some reverbed backup vox while the GB crew jammed in front of an umbrella background. Great stuff all around.
Neon Indian
“Should Have Taken Acid With You” (Unofficial Butterteam) Video
In the unofficial “Should of Taken Acid With You” video by Butterteam the deliciously nostalgic Neon Indian track is set to a ponytailed dude losing his shit on a convenience store cam. He goes for a six pack of beer but constantly falls to the ground and into the junk food. His squirmy hijinx sorta line up well with Alan Palomo’s hazy synth squiggles about being too lazy for mind expanding drugs. The excellent Psychic Chasms is out today on Lefse. (via GvsB)
Above we have Cale Park’s electro-tinged treatment of the multi-vox anthem, “Even Think.” Stream the original from the band’s Myspace for comparison’s sake. Be sure to check out Drink Up Buttercup at CMJ and on tour this fall.
Lightning Bolt
“Flooded Chamber” MP3
Oct 12, 2009
Providence, Rhode Island noiseniks Lightning Bolt keep bringing the ruckus with each new aural preview of their fifth full-length, Earthly Delights (which comes out tomorrow on Load). FADER has the cacophonic “Flooded Chamber” on offer today. The new cut stays in line with the duo’s hazy Philip Glass and Sun Ra influences as Brian Gibson’s high-pitched bass guitar sribbles encircle Brian Chippendale’s popcorn-like drum hits and warbled alien vocals. The pair’s about to tour Japan, Auckland/New Zealand, and the U.K.
