“Brush Brush Brush” (on Yo Gabba Gabba!) MP3

Oct 01, 2009

FILTER U.S. Recordings is releasing the first compilation of tunes from the groundbreaking, hit Nickelodeon show Yo Gabba Gabba!. The release is called Yo Gabba Gabba! Music Is Awesome! and is due October 20th. You can listen to of Montreal sing “Brush Brush Brush” above. It’s about the importance of dental hygiene, which every self-respecting indie kid should care about these days. Dental health gets a sexy overhaul on this disco funk cut.

That colorful disc also features original tracks from indie bands such as Biz Markie, Chromeo, Money Mark, The Roots, Mark Kozelek, The Shins and others. It’s also available for pre-order on iTunes now.

In addition to the new disc, Yo Gabba Gabba! fiends can experience the show’s trippy visuals in person this fall. Yo Gabba Gabba! LIVE: There’s a Party in My City is hitting Los Angeles (11/14), New York (11/21) and Chicago (12/05). Tickets will be available starting October 9th at 10 a.m. and can be purchased at Ticketmaster and YoGabbaGabbaLive.com. As a parting gift to you (our dear readers), here’s slightly high-looking MGMT singing “Art Is Everywhere” on the show.

Phoenix

“Love Like a Sunset (Animal Collective Remix - Deakin’s Jam)” MP3

Oct 01, 2009

It’s been the year of the Phoenix remix and they won’t stop coming in just yet. First we gave you an earful of Devendra Banhart re-rubbing “Rome” and now we have Animal Collective reworking “Love Like a Sunset.” The subtitle of the remix mentions master knob twiddler Josh “Deakin” Dibb and the spaced-out instrumental certainly has his touch all over it. There’s also plenty of disembodied, original vox from his bandmates, Noah “Panda Bear” Lennox and Dave “Avey Tare” Portner.

Deakin had this to say about the remix on Phoenix’s blog:

“This spring i was in Panama with Brian. We were cramped into a van on a bumpy, winding central american road going a little too fast. Feeling a little edgy, I put on my headphones and listened to United and Alphabetical back to back. I watched passing fruit stands, a sweet central american dusk and memories of the massive schools of jelly fish, snapper, and trevally; the few dolphin and even the few bluefin tuna (too few) that brian and i had just had the joy of diving with the blend of all of these things put me at ease.

Phoenix has been a staple for all four of us since Dave and Noah brought home United from the record store they used to work at. One of the records that would get us through some of those long cross country tour drives, we’ve listened to phoenix’s jams many many times. We were all totally psyched to get asked to do this and it was super fun to work on it. All the best to those dudes”

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Remix Collection) is due in digital form in the U.S. via Glassnote/Loyauté on October 13th. U.K. fans will be able to purchase the remix compilation as part of a Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix 2CD set coming October 19th. Nirvana

“Scoff (Live at Pine Street Theatre)” MP3

Sep 30, 2009

On November 3rd, Sub Pop will reissue Nirvana’s classic 1989 debut Bleach. The 20th anniversary deluxe edition will be available on CD and 180 gram white vinyl. In addition to the album proper, the set includes an unearthed live recording of a 1990 concert at Portland’s Pine Street Theatre. Bleach producer Jack Endino mixed the previously unreleased gig from the original tapes. You can download the outcome of his efforts above.

As it turns out, Endino treated “Scoff” very well. Kurt Cobain’s thrashed voice sounds bracing over the din of his bandmates thrashing through the Bleach cut. It puts your normal live recording to shame. Check out “Scoff” for a crazy hump day surprise. Almost makes you forget that Guitar Hero 5 fiasco.

Rose Elinor Dougall

“Fallen Over” MP3

Sep 30, 2009

Ex-Pipette Rose Elinor Dougall told us in an interview last year that the solo material she’s cobbled together at her flat in between shifts as a barmaid took her into new sonic territories. “This record’s far more personal, and just that will make it completely separate from The Pipettes. I suppose the first single [“Another Version of Pop Song”] is almost like a bridge from my past that leads into my future. It’s one of the more upbeat numbers I’ve written,” said Dougall. Second single, the harpsichord-led “Start/Stop/Synchro,” coninuted the journey earlier this year.

Now we have a taste of Without Why‘s third single, “Falen Over.” The whirling dervish of a song starts with an ominous church organ before a careening ‘70s groove about falling in love with Chairlift-style lyrics takes hold. It’s the first release to feature Dougall’s backing band, The Distractions, and they sound great.

The 7” single is being released November 23rd on Scarlett Music. “Fallen Over” is backed by the B-side “Fale Hopes,” which just features Dougall at the piano. Both were recorded by Lee Baker at his Brighton studio. The first two singles sold out quickly so you best act accordingly. Without Why comes out sometime next year.

Lightning Bolt

“Sound Guardians” MP3

Sep 30, 2009

Providence, Rhode Island’s Lightning Bolt‘s fifth LP, Earthly Delights is out October 13th on Load. The noise mavens open the album with a riotous scree entitled “Sound Guardians.” Initially there’s a “sonic wah” from Brian Gibson’s bass that washes over you and then all hell breaks loose on Brian Chippendale’s drum kit. Bolt’s full apocalypse is already on a loop in my house. (via Stereogum)

Pictureplane

“5th Sun (Rainbow Arabia’s Heliopolis Mix)” MP3

Sep 30, 2009

Denver drum machine-and-synth artist Pictureplane (Travis Egedy) crafted some spooky tunes on his debut, Dark Rift. Here, the Echo Park, L.A.‘s Rainbow Arabia inject a litle bit of their Middle Eastern steez into Egedy’s ghostly “5th Sun.” Pictureplane is on tour with HEALTH this fall.

Sunny Day Real Estate

“Seven” (Live on Jimmy Fallon) Video

Sep 30, 2009

Watch on YouTube

You can watch the newly reassembled emo maven burn up Late Night With Jimmy Fallon‘s stage on the Diary anthem “Seven” above. That clip comes from Prefix Mag, who also note that this isn’t the network television premiere for “Seven.” Go here to watch a much younger Sunny jam the track on MTV’s Jon Stewart Show. They’re a little balder now but still work their audiences over with the same amount of intensity.

Little Dragon

“Blinking Pigs” MP3

Sep 30, 2009

Since their signing to the U.K.‘s Peacefrog Records in 2007 for their self-titled debut LP, Gothenburg’s Little Dragon have been the little synthpop quartet with all the power. Blog blasts for the first few leaked tracks (“My Step,” “Feather,” “Swimming”) from sophomore album, Machine Dreams, have been largely positive and “Blinking Pigs” is no exception. The track starts with some experimental burblings before desending into a starry-eyed pop-soul melody via lead vocalist Yukimi Nagano. Machine Dreams is out October 20th through Peacefrog.
