From their fourth album Music for Men (available now via Columbia), dance-rock trio Gossip shot a roller disco clip for “Love Long Distance,” which is coming out as a single on September 13th. Check out those big balloon heads! The group is touring the U.S. now.
Kurt Vile
“Beach on the Moon” MP3
Aug 06, 2009
Kurt Vile‘s “Beach on the Moon” recycles lyrics from Constant Hitmaker‘s standout song “Freeway,” but its sparse arrangement lends itself a more haunting atmosphere. On Monday, August 10th, Mexican Summer will be selling repressings of God Is Saying This To You…, which includes “Moon.” Only 30 are available, so get moving. The lo-fi Philly singer-songwriter and The War on Drugs member will release his Matador debut, Childish Prodigy, on October 6th.
The “round robin” No Deachunter tour is in full swing. Deerhunter, Dan Deacon and No Age all play a drone-y 10-minute version of Deerhunter’s “Cryptograms” in this high-quality YouTube video. Last weekend, Metro Gallery‘s Guy Werner helmed the video of the mega-group performing at the tour’s first date at Baltimore’s Sonar. The remaining four No Deachunter dates are below:
No Deachunter tour:
08-05 Bloomington, IN - Rhinos 08-06 Madison, WI - UW Madison Memorial Terrace 08-07 Milwaukee, WI - Turner Hall Ballroom 08-09 Chicago, IL - Logan Square Auditorium
Brown Recluse
“Contour and Context” MP3
Aug 06, 2009
Philadelphia’s Brown Recluse have several brothers in its group and “Contour and Context” echoes a warmth of strong family ties. Recluse will soon be releasing The Soft Skin 12-inch EP, via Slumberland Records. It will be digitally released as well. This song, taken from that EP, thrusts forward with piano, handclaps, trumpets and light, folksy acoustic guitar. BR six-piece are currently recording their long-player for Slumberland Records, due early 2010. So far, the Zombies-esque band only have one date scheduled. They’re playing at the Princeton, New Jersey WPRB Show at Whole Foods, August 6th.

The Big Pink
A Brief History of Love MP3 Stream
Aug 06, 2009
The Big Pink‘s debut LP is now streaming for one week in order to promote the upcoming release, which is due out Sept 14th via 4AD. The full album is much more polished than expected but there’s plenty to sink your teeth into here. For more information on the hazy pop duo read our interview from earlier this year. Check out TheBrief History of Love stream here. Also, at the download link above we have single “Dominos” again. It’s a keeper.
Media news quickly becomes old in the Web 2.0 world, so there’s a very big chance you’ve already seen Modest Mouse‘s sorta new clip for “King Rat.” It’s a deviously twisted and creepy track from the just-released compilation No One’s First and You’re Next. The video was helmed by late actor/best Joker ever Heath Ledger and was finished after his untimely death by the film company The Masses. During the grisly clip, whales hunt humans to underscore Ledger’s passionate stance against the illegal commercial whale hunts taking place off the coast of Australia every year.
Fool’s Gold
Micachu & The Shapes
“Surprise Hotel (Micachu & The Shapes Remix)”
Aug 05, 2009
Previously this year, London’s Micachu & The Shapes twisted our notions of what “pop music” should be with Jewellery while L.A.‘s Fool’s Gold delivered a bona fide genre-bending summer jam with “Surprise Hotel.” Now, we get the best of both crazy worlds with Micachu’s remix of that Fool’s Gold song. Although it only clocks in at 3:31 minutes (half the original’s running time), it’s still fairly robust. Sadly, Micachu’s hyperactive reworking comes to an abrupt hault. The Shapes’ Jewellery is out now and Fool’s Gold’s self-titled debut LP drops September 29th, via IAMSOUND.
Yoni Wolf
“Shoot the Singer (1 Sick Verse)” (Pavement cover on TheBayBridged.com) MP3
Aug 05, 2009
TheBayBridged.com and New, Improved Recording posted several studio session songs from Yoni Wolf of Oakland art pop group WHY?. This was the third installment in New, Improved, LIVE, the site’s ongoing monthly series of live studio sessions at the New, Improved Recording studio in Oakland, California. Wolf gave solo vocal-and-piano renditions of “Against Me” and “Eskimo” from his band’s upcoming album, Eskimo Snow, Alopecia‘s “Brook and Waxing,” as well as a stunning Pavement cover. Wolf strips “Shoot the Singer (1 Sick Verse)” down to the essentials. The track originally appeared on Pavement’s 1994 Watery, Domestic EP. Wolf was also interviewed about the new LP, among other items. WHY?‘s Eskimo Snow is out September 22nd on Anticon. Videos from the session, via Pandora, will be published later this month.
