Los Angeles-based electronic producer/composer Nosaj Thing is back with the release of his new album, Parallels, out now via Innovative Leisure. The new album exhibits a nice balance of dark electro-soul and vivid ambience and “Form” is a splendid example of the latter. Night Idea out of Richmond, VA are getting ready to release their latest full length, Riverless, on October 13th via Gigantic Noise / Citrus City. Under the Radar has the premiere of the new single “Perfect Water”. The track provides ample space for instrumental flexing, in particular for a flourishing lead guitar, within a melding of style described as “a complex blend of experimental pop, prog rock, and widescreen post-punk…that touches upon everything from King Crimson and Pink Floyd to Deerhoof and Palm.”

In true prog rock fashion, there is a loose concept that unifies the music and lyrics throughout Riverless. Speaking about the themes, Night Idea shared, “The events [of “Perfect Water”] occur in a different time and place, involving a sudden and mysterious drought and the events that unfold because of it. People become hypnotized and begin disappearing. Part of the fun as the listener is making your own ideas and images to the music.”

Based on “Perfect Water” it seems that Night Idea’s new album will have plenty of territory for the listener’s imagination to interact. Take a listen and check out the band’s upcoming tour dates:

Not knowing Tobacco, the first thought passing through my head when listening to “Eye Punch” from the instrumental rarities & unreleased beats collection Ripe & Majestic released yesterday on Rad Cult, is that it feels as though it could have been produced twenty years ago and dusted off. Indeed, electronic musician Thomas Fec works with pre-digital electronic instruments such as analog synthesizers and tape machines to locate an awesomely dated sound. Today, a whole lot of artists and labels are taking part in Bandcamp’s response to the latest discriminatory policy measure by the most incompetent and ill-suited administration in U.S. history. For the rest of the day, Bandcamp is donating 100% of its share of all purchases to the Transgender Law Center in reaction to Trump’s declaration that transgender troops are no longer welcome in the military (They were never really welcome in the first place). Will Toledo and Car Seat Headrest are taking part, releasing the exclusive demo “War Is Coming (If You Want It) [March Mix], with all proceeds going to TLC. Longtime friends Jordan Smith and Matt Regner from Omaha, Nebraska began their band Twinsmith as DIY tinkerers, writing a pair of records starting with 2013’s self-titled debut and then 2015’s Alligator Years before recruiting bassist Bill Sharp and others to reinforce their live performance.

Now, Twinsmith is returning with their third album, Stay Cool, out this Friday via Saddle Creek. The title offers instruction that its songs carry out. The new album delivers the clean, sparkling refinement of their new sound, as clear as day and with an immediacy that is completely catching. Honed with the assistance of friend and Omaha neighbor, producer Graham Ulicny (Reptar, The Faint), the emphasis this time around was to simplify things by stripping away the excess, allowing the essential parts to come forward.

The retooled sound of Stay Cool was actually found through a rediscovery of their original approach. “When we first started the band, Matt and I used an 8-track recorder and made all our demos in the basement of my parents’ house” recalls Smith. “For this new one we drew back a lot (from the first two albums). We recorded it like when we first started— (this time) in the dining room at our house, with old synths and ’80s drum machines. We wanted to drop back and do what was comfortable..”

“The main goal was to make something a bit more personal to us.” continues Smith. “The last album was kind of in-your-face pop music and that’s why we made this so short and sweet; we wanted listeners to hear the small, distinct sounds we were working on. Because there were only a few people involved, we could make our decisions more directly.”

Stay Cool sees Twinsmith’s sound evolving from hazy surf rock to a fuller, more dynamic guitar-and-keys pop appeal. The fresh, slick new direction produces results that will have you bopping, hopping and electric sliding with glee. The return of alt rock luminaries Broken Social Scene is cause for celebration. The Canadian collective’s fifth full-length, and first in seven years, Hug of Thunder, is out today and is fantastic. It’s certainly one of the best albums of the year so far. It’s hard to choose a song to lead into the glorious sound still intact, but “Protest Song” is as good as any. Check it out below and do yourself a favor - keep diving in. The water is both exhilarating and warm and after a while, you don’t want to get out.

Laucan has released another beautiful song ahead of his anticipated debut full-length album FramesperSecond out July 21st on Sunday Best. “Molten Silver” is the b-side to current single and album track “Wait For The Impact” and it is a classic folk song, showing the versatility of the Lewes, England raised newcomer, Laurence Galpin. Laucan has demonstrated an impressive handle on elaborate and rangey electronic/instrumental compositions to date and ““Molten Silver” is emblematic of his roots in folk music.

Of the track Galpin comments: “One weekday afternoon a long time ago I fell asleep while playing Bomberman64, a long time before that, I woke up in the middle of the night on a trampoline in the Sussex Downs. ‘Molten Silver’ came somewhere in between while I slept”
