Christopher Nolan Announces Title of Third Batman Film, Rules Out The Riddler
No 3-D Plans, More Main Baddie Rumors Circulate

The Dark Knight Rises. Sure, it’s a mouthful, but that’s the title director Christopher Nolan is going with for his third Batman film in the highly successful franchise he breathed new life into with 2005’s Batman Begins and 2008’s blockbuster sequel The Dark Knight. The title is a keen play on the fourth chapter of Frank Miller’s original Dark Knight series (the chapter was titled The Dark Knight Falls) and signals a rebirth for the shadowy crimefighter.
So, we know the title now, but what about those endless rumors that the Dark Detective would match wits with The Riddler? Nolan also solved that mind-boggler today. “It won’t be the Riddler,” the director told the L.A. Times’ Hero Complex blog. The eventual casting news is eagerly anticipated since whoever takes on the role will have their work cut out for them after Heath Ledger‘s unsettling and Oscar-winning portrayal of The Joker.
The tight-lipped auteur stopped short of divulging the true identity of the main black hat, but Nolan did reiterate in another post that The Dark Knight Rises will not be shot in 3-D. (Whew!) Instead, Nolan plans to use a combination of IMAX cameras and high-definition technology, similar to what he used on The Dark Knight, which grossed $1 billion worldwide, third all-time just behind James Cameron‘s mega-blockbusters, Titanic and Avatar.
Nolan also threw a couple bones to the L.A. Times interviewer regarding plot details. The upcoming film, co-written with Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer, will find the Caped Crusader on the lam from the Gothamites he’s continuously helped.
“We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones,” Nolan adds.
One of those fresh faces will be Tom Hardy, the hulking dreamboat who played the counterfeiter for Leonardo DiCaprio’s ragtag team of dream heisters in Nolan’s Inception. Hardy has reportedly been contracted to play one of the lead roles. There are also rumors circulating that Nolan has been meeting with actresses in their 20s and 30s for another key spot, though there’s no hard facts on which character that might be (Talia al Ghul, possibly?).
For the Bat geeks reading this, Nolan has already tackled quite a few evildoers from Batman’s main Rogues’ Gallery, including Ra’s al Ghul, Scarecrow, Joker, and Two-Face. Apart from The Riddler, Nolan has previously ruled out using more comic book-y archfoes such as Mr. Freeze or The Penguin. Additionally, Two-Face is dead according to Nolan. Who else could fit into Nolan’s gritty Bat-verse?? Killer Croc? Hugo Strange? Black Mask? Mr. Zsasz? Deadshot? Some new character? Time will tell, but feel free to sound about villain rumors and the new title in the comment box below.
