David Byrne released a new album, American Utopia, last week via Todomundo/Nonesuch. Previously he shared the album’s first single, “Everybody’s Coming to My House.” It was one of our Songs of the Week, was co-written by Brian Eno, and features contributions from Sampha, along with TTY, Happa Isaiah Barr (Onyx Collective), and others. Now Byrne has shared a video for the song, kind of. Although it’s labeled as an official video, it doesn’t feature Byrne or his version of the song. Instead the Detroit School of Arts’ Vocal Jazz Ensemble performs the song and the video was partially filmed by students in the school’s radio and TV department. Below is the official video, along with a longer version of the film (entitled American Utopia: Detroit) and Byrne’s original song.

Byrne had this to say about the video on his website: “When I saw what the DSA students did with my song, it completely changed the way I thought of the song. In face, it changed the meaning of the song-I realized it was about inclusion, welcoming and not being alone. It’s a more generous interpretation of the song than what I do with my voice. Just goes to show how a song can change (radically!) depending on who is singing it.”

The website also includes quotes from various students who took part. Byrne also performed “Everybody’s Coming to My House” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last Friday, complete with a portable band and choreographed moves featuring Colbert, and that video is below too.

American Utopia is Byrne’s first solo album since 2004’s Grown Backwards. It features collaborations with producer Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, King Krule, Sampha, Savages), Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never), Jam City, Thomas Bartlett (St. Vincent producer, aka Doveman), Jack Peñate, and others. American Utopia was recorded in New York City at David’s home studio, as well as at Reservoir Studios, Oscilloscope, XL Studios, and Crowdspacer Studio, with additional recording at Livingston Studio 1 in London.

It totally changed the way I thought of it. Actually, it changed the importance of the melody I understood it was about consideration, inviting, and not being distant from everyone else. It’s a more liberal elucidation of the tune. We are all in a similar house on the off chance that we need to be.

What are some other projects by DSA students? They could share their thesis papers on the Kettering University blog and https://writemyessay.pro/ in samples.
