Diane Coffee (the project of Shaun Fleming) is releasing a new album, Internet Arms, on April 19 via Polyvinyl. Now he has shared another song from the album, “Lights Off.” Listen to it below, followed by Diane Coffee’s upcoming tour dates.
In a press release Fleming had this to say about the song: “For this track, I enlisted the help of childhood friends, Ian Franzino and Andrew Haas of Family Affair Productions, who brought their knowledge of pop production to this song. With ‘Lights Off,’ I wanted the feeling of stagnation expressed in the lyrics juxtaposed against big blasting synths and trap beats to create the excitement and exhilaration of a new beginning. I wanted to straddle the line between the tension of wanting to jump out of your skin versus letting it all go.”
Previously he shared a video for its first single, “Not Ready to Go,” which was one of our Songs of the Week. Then he shared another song from the album, “Like a Child Does.”
Internet Arms is the third Diane Coffee album, the follow-up to 2015’s Everybody’s a Good Dog. Fleming was formerly a member of Foxygen.
Fleming had this to say about the album in a previous press release: “It became obvious as I was writing the album, just how entangled my social/emotional self is with technology, making me more exposed and simultaneously less connected. Why are we so drawn to this existence? With Internet Arms, I had a chance to explore these questions and it became very clear to me that I have a intricate and somewhat disconnected relationship with how I perceive myself and how I project myself. After wrestling with these questions on my own, the album has become my way to broaden the dialogue, and check in with everyone to ask, ‘How are you doing in our new worlds? Are you successfully navigating both your real and your digital existence? Is this working? Is this our destiny, or is there an alternative?’”
