Fables Comic Book Possibly Heading to the Big Screen

Fables, the comic book series chronicling the lives of famous Fairy Tale characters relocated to New York, is rumoured to be heading to the big screen with David Yates (director of the last two and next two Harry Potter films) possibly attached to direct (according to Pajiba).
However, it appears the reported ABC television adaptation of the comic book is a no-go. As series creator Bill Willingham told Under the Radar earlier this year, “It’s dead. That’s brand new news, by the way that I’m not entirely sure I should be sharing, but why try to pretend otherwise when there’s no purpose to it?” He continued, saying, “I am not regularly kept in the loop, but occasionally someone picks up the phone to mention what’s happened with the Fables property. DC wanted to be able to chart the course of a Fables TV series or movie on their own, without constantly getting my permission and input, so they bought my share of those media rights from me early on. They don’t need to include me in any TV or movie plans.”
Fables is a very long and complex series, they are already up to 13 collected volumes and are approaching their 100th issue, so it seems that a TV series would be a better place to explore all its characters and plots. But a movie budget would be needed to render some of Fables’ epic battles and magical characters. So perhaps a series of movies, akin to Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, is in order.
