Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) released his latest album, Pure Comedy, back in April via Sub Pop (it was Under the Radar‘s #1 Album of 2017 So Far in our midyear wrap up). Tillman recently said he was almost done with his next album and that it would be due out in 2018. Now in a new interview with the British music magazine Uncut Tillman has shed some more light on his next album and also revealed some of its potential song titles.
In the interview Tillman describes the new album as “the real I Love You, Honeybear but without the cynicism,” referencing his 2015 album.
Tillman explains further in the interview with Uncut‘s Jaan Uhelszki: “Most of this next album was written in a six-week period where I was kind of on the straits. I was living in a hotel for two months. It’s kind of about… yeah… misadventure. The words were just pouring out of me. It’s really rooted in something that happened last year that was… well, my life blew up. I think the music essentially serves the purpose of making the painful and the isolating less painful and less isolating. But in short, it’s a heartache album.”
When asked to go into more detail, Tillman replied: “I think I instinctually understood that if I blew everything up, I could put it back together better than it was. But look, I don’t want to talk about what happened. Maybe in 30 years from now I will. I know that sounds dramatic. But to talk to me about what this album’s about, I’d have to bring other people into the picture who don’t want to be.”
The song titles Tillman mentioned were: “Ouch, I’m Drowning,” “Dum Dum Blues,” “Mr Tillman, Please Exit The Lobby,” and “Well, We’re Only People And There’s Nothing Much We Can Do About It.”
Tillman says the sessions began almost by accident over the summer when he was playing drums on Adam Green’s new album, which Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado was producing. Rado and Tillman both had the next day free and Tillman decided to record some songs with him, which quickly led to the new Father John Misty album.
