Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) only just released a new 75-minute long album, Pure Comedy, back in April via Sub Pop. It was Under the Radar‘s #1 Album of 2017 So Far. At a show yesterday at the Metro Theatre in Sydney, Australia, Tillman told the audience that he was already almost done with his next album. “I’m mixing it next week,” he said, and then joked it was called “Pure Comedy 2.” He also said it was due out next year. Of course, whether or not Tillman was being wholly serious about any of this is up for debate, as he’s known for his intelligent pranks. But he’s also quite a prolific songwriter and seems fast in the studio, someone who can quickly and convincingly cover Ryan Adams covering Taylor Swift in the style of The Velvet Undergound without much notice. And certainly in the classic rock era legends like The Beatles and David Bowie used to release an album or more every year (Bowie’s classics Low and “Heroes” both came out in 1977, for example). Below is video of the whole exchange, via Music Feeds. Also below is Father John Misty’s crazy video for “Total Entertainment Forever” and his upcoming tour dates.

Father John Misty is mixing a new album next week, and it already has a title! ???? #fatherjohnmisty #purecomedy

Father John Misty appeared on the cover of Under the Radar‘s recent Spring 2017 Issue. Also read our rave review of Pure Comedy.

Pure Comedy is the follow-up to Father John Misty’s excellent 2015-released sophomore album, I Love You, Honeybear. I Love You, Honeybear, was Under the Radar’s #1 album of 2015. Consequently, Father John Misty was on the cover of our Best of 2015 print issue and you can read that cover story article here. Also read our earlier 2015 print article on Father John Misty and our earlier 2015 bonus Q&A with Tillman (also read our 2012 interview with him).
