Jack White Creates a 3RPM Record

Happy Third Birthday Third Man Records!

Jack White has said hell no to reforming The White Stripes…but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his fare share of kooky projects in the works. (If anything, he’s got more, now that he’s not wasting his time re-answering that question.) Behold the newest must-have from the Third Man Records laboratory. In honor of their third anniversary, they’ve created an LP meant to spin at 3 RPM.

Cue record scratch.

Yup, the 3 RPM record is meant to spin at 3 RPM. It also contains every one of the “Blue Series” singles the label has created to date. The press release—which says it better than we ever could:

The world’s first 3 RPM record is a study in contradictions—it’s cut at the slowest speed yet it plays faster than anything you’ve ever heard. It’s a compilation of 7 inch records but it’s packaged like a 12 inch. But the 12 inch sleeve is made like our 7 inch sleeve (as it is one continues piece of paper folded in half and put into an acetate sleeve). A bit like a snake eating its own tail. It comes with three bumper stickers yet there is no bumper. We gave it away for free yet given what it has fetched on eBay it is proving to be fairly valuable. It’s easy to play but impossible to hear. You put your finger on it to slow it down, but this is no easy task and we estimate it would take 333 days of 33 hours training per day for your finger, hand, and arm muscles to spin at a continuous speed of 3 rpm for X hours and X minutes.

Umm…yeah. Check out the training video below.

jack, jack, jack. a true inspiration… between dead weather, raconteurs, the stripes, and solo work.. he does literally more than any other artist I’ve ever heard. Not only is every song he works on a true masterpiece, but then he takes it a step further with something like a 3RPM record (world’s first) or homemade guitar out of scraps! blunderbuss will be yet another amazing addition to my Mr. White collection.
